An AM cortisol lab test helps assess adrenal gland function by measuring cortisol levels in the morning when they are typically highest. It is useful for diagnosing conditions like adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease) or excess cortisol production (Cushing’s syndrome), as well as evaluating stress response and certain hormonal disorders. This test provides critical insight into the body’s ability to regulate metabolism, immune function, and blood pressure, guiding appropriate treatment if abnormalities are detected.

Preparation

This test may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R). Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
