IGF-1 (Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1)

Test Number: 010363

Use

An Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) blood test helps assess growth hormone levels and can aid in diagnosing conditions like growth disorders, acromegaly, or growth hormone deficiency. Since IGF-1 levels remain relatively stable throughout the day, this test provides a more reliable measure of growth hormone activity than direct GH testing. It is particularly useful for evaluating pituitary function, monitoring hormone therapy, and detecting abnormalities that may affect metabolism and development. Results are to be used in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory data to assist the clinician in the assessment of growth disorders.

Preparation

This test may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R). Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
