What is a DEXA Body Composition Scan?

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) at Inertia Medical is the gold standard for measuring body composition and bone health. This non-invasive scan provides highly accurate data on fat mass, lean muscle mass, bone density, and—critically—visceral fat, the type of fat most strongly linked to chronic disease risk.
Whether you’re tracking fitness progress, monitoring metabolic health, or establishing a baseline before starting a new wellness program, DEXA gives you clear, actionable insights. Our team helps interpret your scan and connect the data to your goals for strength, longevity, or weight management.

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is a quick, non-invasive imaging test that accurately measures body fat, lean muscle mass, visceral fat, and bone density. It’s considered the gold standard for body composition and bone health analysis.

It provides detailed data on:

  • Body fat percentage
  • Lean mass (muscle) distribution
  • Visceral fat (dangerous fat around organs)
  • Bone density (risk for osteopenia or osteoporosis)
  • Fat distribution between limbs, trunk, and total body

This allows for precise tracking of fitness, fat loss, or health risks over time.

  • Avoid eating or drinking 2–3 hours before your scan
  • Don’t work out for 24 hours prior
  • Wear light clothing with no metal (zippers, snaps, etc.)
  • Use the restroom before your scan

These steps help ensure consistent and accurate results.

The scan itself takes just 10–15 minutes. With check-in and review, the total visit is usually 20 minutes or less.
